Antique glass hens can be both. Not only is the glass valuable and rare, but being in the form of hens, these dishes are often very appealing by sight. These dishes are among my mom's favorites, as the kitchen has three shelves of antique glass hens from all different colors and sizes.

That is part of what is appealing. Purple, blue, red, orange, pink, white, tangerine, yellow, and green antique glass chickens all sit together on the same shelf. These chickens can also be from a wide variety of companies, from the usually non-collectible, to famous glass companies such as Fenton Glass.

These are attractive not only because you can't often find designs and craftsmanship like this now, but also because whether antique or not, these decorative glassware pieces can be enjoyed. The extra value that comes from being antique makes some of these glass chickens quite valuable.

This is part of the fun of antiques. It's not just "old stuff," the antiques are beautiful, well detailed art. At home we tend to tease Mom about all her glass chickens, but they are wonderful pieces of art that add a brightness to the kitchen that wouldn't be there otherwise.

Finding antiques that you love is the best reason to get into the hobby. Maybe you will find that you love the beautiful antique glass hens as much as Mom does!

Antiques - When Is An Object Considered An Antique And Not A Collectible?

It has always been a puzzle to me when an object, somewhat aged, can be termed an antique.

Must it be really very old- perhaps in excess of 100 years to be called an antique? Or just when can we call an object an antique?

After all, we very loosely use the term antique for any object that has lived past its popularity. A lady's coach handbag that was in vogue in summer, is now called an antique in winter!

In the days of the British Empire where the British had their conquests in far away worlds and colonised many territories, they left behind many legacies of worth. British systems of government, british designs and most of all british products and goods which now can rightly be called antiques and their systems "antiquated" at this time. Thus when I discovered a really old looking lock with the logo of the maker stamped onto it and marked "Warranted Best English Made" and " Warranted Secure" amongst some old belongings inherited from my deceased father who lived through the colonial period, I thought the lock must really be an antique.

So when is an antique really an antique?

The definition of antique varies from location to location, product to product and year to year.

In any case, universal common definitions of antiques adopted worldwide consider an item which is at least 75 years old and has unique features to enable it to be collected or kept as desirable due to it being rare, or useful is considered an antique.

Generally, cars are considered antiques in the U.S. if they are older than 25 years. In Kansas, however, I learnt that cars are eligible for an antique tag after 30 years. Guitars are only considered vintage if they were made before 1972.

In the UK anything over 75 years old generally qualifies as an antique. A car is known as a collectible "classic" rather than an antique after 25 years.

There is an understood line between antiques and collectibles in the United States as well. An item is tagged as an antique by most reliable commercial antique dealers if it is more than 100 years old, even though the universal common understanding is 75 years, and anything less than 100 years is called a collectible.

It is not always the antiques that carries a higher price tag. Collectibles can be worth many times that of an antique. It all depends on the eyes of the beholder.

Japanese antiques are absolutely one of the most beautiful collections in the world. There are so many great pieces to choose from. Here are some of the best pieces in Japanese Antiques.

Choba Tansu which is called a Merchant Chest, the type of wood is called Hinoki, Sugi and it dates back to the 1880s. These chests of drawers stand about 34 inches in height and 47-1/2 in width. It has cabinet and 9 drawers, very beautifully crafted.

There is a piece that is beautiful for the fact that is an antique but it is not a pretty piece. It is a Choba Tansu called a Merchant Chest and it is also made from Hinoki and Sugi wood. It is a small chest of 3 drawers and is only 15-3/8 inches tall and 14 inches wide.

The Clothing Chest called an Isho Tansu is made from Kiri, Hinoki and Sugi; it stands about 40 inches and 37 inches wide. This piece is a two section with heavy hardware and nothing has been altered through the years. The time period is 1880s.

Aside from the Japanese furniture that has beautiful hard carved figurines. One piece is called Mother and Son, it is ceramic piece of a traditional Japanese woman breastfeeding her baby. It is a detailed and hand painted, the age is from the 1700s. There are many antique Samurai Dolls, handcrafted in the 1890s. These antiques are worth some money but depending on if they have a letter of authenticity will determine how much they are worth.

Kitchen antiques are the way to see a true antique, there are Japanese Iron Teakettles that have a bronze lid, the time period is 1890. The shape of the teakettle is unlike the teakettles of today, these kettles are heavier and the Japanese believe that they are capturing the spirit of the moment as the share tea.

Japanese Antiques can be found through an antique dealer and online. When purchasing any type of antique online ask for the letter of authenticity if you are buying something the dealer tells you is an antique.

REPAIRING JOINTS. Furniture joints are usually held together with glue, pegs, wedges, screws, nails, or sometimes a combination of these. They're usually the first thing to fix on a chair or table. This is a good project for a beginner, and it often prevents further significant damage to your furniture. If a piece is broken, you can usually replace it. This is especially true when a dresser drawer guide (also called a glider) is missing; that's one of the most common repairs to antique furniture. Remove the broken piece. If it can be glued back together, do so. With less valuable furnishings, many auction houses use hot glue for this purpose. For other jobs, wood glue and some reinforcements may be necessary. If a broken or missing piece cannot be fixed, a local carpenter or woodshop can probably make a replacement piece for you. But, take the broken piece to a home improvement store first; many of them carry standard wooden shapes and sizes that fit popular styles of furniture. To repair loose joints, disassemble the pieces, sand off the old glue, and apply fresh glue. If the parts need to be held in place for hours while they dry, be sure to use a clamp that won't leave a mark on the furniture. Many antiques shops use a special web clamp; this is a smart investment if you expect to repair much furniture. Otherwise, nylon rope or long strips of cotton (about two inches wide) can be tied, tourniquet style, to hold the parts in place while drying.

What constitutes an antique and what is it worth? You should know everything there is to know about your area of antiquing to make wise buying decisions, including what to look for in a valuable piece. This article will give tips on value, searching, finding and condition of antique furniture.

The word antique is used to describe anything old that is fairly rare. Old is considered to be anything that is over 100 years old. Rare is used to described an item that is limited in its supply or, in other words, there are hardly any of the item around anymore. You must have a discerning eye while shopping for antiques because even if a piece looks old does not mean it is an antique. Furthermore, even when something really is old, if no one wants it; it will be worthless. On the flip side, an item can be newer than 100 years old and will be very collectible if it is in high demand, thus it will have a high value. A pieces value is based on demand in connection with limited supply.

There are approximately 15 major areas of antiques, to name a few: furniture, toys, ceramics, and jewelry. When you decide to start collecting antiques you will need to choose an area or two and study and learn all you can about it to really be successful. You want to be able to know a really valuable find when you see it, and know you are getting it at a good price. Each area of antiques has its own history, value, rules, frauds, junk and exciting finds. For this article we are going to go over what to know about antique furniture.

Antique furniture is popular and will almost always appreciate in value because of it's solid wood construction and beautiful craftsmanship. Furniture today is not built like it used to be and people want pieces with style and character that will hold up over time. When you buy antique furniture you should always buy what you like and what you will want in your house, unless you are going to turn around and sell it for a profit.

There are four sub-categories in antique furniture: English, European (which is usually French or German), American, and Far Eastern, which is usually Chinese. English furniture is divided into Victorian or Pre-Victorian. American furniture will be Shaker, New York or Western. And Far Eastern furniture is described by the period or date of manufacture. Most people will enjoy one of these types of furniture and begin collecting and decorating their home with that one type.

The type of wood the piece is made from is of significance in determining value. Mahogany, walnut, oak and pine are the most sought after. If the piece has it's original hardware and wood panels it will be worth a lot more than a piece that has been "re-done" due to broken parts. If you have a piece of furniture that is not in top condition, with scratches on the finish, leave it alone if you believe it has some value. Never strip and refinish it. If a leg is loose on a table you can leave it alone or put a dab of wood glue in the joint. Never remove a leg and re-fit it. If a piece is a bit wobbly this is a good indication that it is authentically old. Make sure you inspect the entire piece of furniture for matching wood. Sometimes the back panels had been damaged and they will be replaced with another type of wood.

Caring for a piece of antique furniture is important in preserving it and the value it holds. You should always use pure beeswax (carnauba) to clean and polish your antiques.
Lemon oil is a big mistake because it dries out the wood, darkens the patina and will definitely decrease the furniture's value. When shopping for furniture, rub your finger across the finish and if an oil film is left on your finger the dealer has used lemon oil on it. Don't buy it.

You can find antique furniture just about anywhere. First search your attic and your parent's attics. You can even try and get into the attics of the neighbor's homes. Attics are the best places to find antiques people have forgotten about. To find some more real deals, go to rummage sales, garage sales, estate sales, yard sales, thrift stores, pawn shops and flea markets. You might be able to pick up an antique at a really low price. Estate sales are usually the best place to find antiques because the items belonged to an elderly person. There are also antique stores, malls, dealers and auctions. You will be able to find tons of furniture and antiques here, but you may have to pay more, and you will definitely need to be savvy so you won't get ripped off. You can expect to pay or get a variety of prices on antique furniture.

When you are new at buying antiques stick with one item and then start learning about other types of antiques.

Remember, condition is the most important aspect in determining value, so inspect each piece thoroughly. Do not buy on impulse, take your time and do some research to make sure it is an authentic piece. Don't do all your research in the store you will be purchasing it from, go elsewhere and get second opinions. Most of all, have a good time and only buy what you like and you will never be stuck with something you don't want.

This is part of the fun of antiques. It's not just "old stuff," the antiques are beautiful, well detailed art. At home we tend to tease Mom about all her glass chickens, but they are wonderful pieces of art that add a brightness to the kitchen that wouldn't be there otherwise.

We all need a sink to clean up in, and the proliferation of great designer vessel sinks has opened a world of possibilities to recycle all manner of antique cabinets, chests and tables as vanity cabinets. Endless design possibilities can create a truly unique bathroom in almost any style. Juxtaposing historic pieces with contemporary fittings generates excitement, and many vessel sinks cleverly mounted on cabinets are really works of art. Sinks are available in countless styles and colors of glass, painted porcelain, brass, copper and nickel. Faucets have many different finishes in traditional and modern configurations. Antique and vintage dressers, sideboards, writing tables, work benches, and bakers tables can all be recycled into sink cabinets that are one of a kind, reflecting your individual taste and creativity. Many of these pieces are much less expensive than than the charmless mass-produced cabinets seen in home centers and bath design shops. It takes a little more planning and vision, but the result is certainly worthwhile.

An example uses a late Victorian or Eastlake washstand from the 1880s. Originally made for a bedroom in the days before plumbing, a bowl and pitcher would have sat on the marble top, and the waste jug would have been behind the door on the bottom. Built of solid walnut, the original beveled mirror and marble top were fitted to accommodate a glass vessel sink and brushed nickel contemporary faucet. The stunning result is functional and truly unique. A craftsman easily drilled the marble top, made adjustments to the interior of the chest, and the installation was relatively simple. The result is an elegant and historic look.

Another bathroom recycles an Art Deco cabinet from about 1930 that was meant to hold sheet music next to a piano. Now fitted with a textured glass vessel sink and a waterfall faucet, this adaptation of an antique piece was even simpler. Compact enough for a small bathroom, this installation is bright and cheerful with the clean, sleek lines of the 1930s.

Countless antique and vintage pieces of furniture can be adapted to hold a sink. I suggest ignoring the original function of the furniture, judge how much the piece appeals to you, and consider its size and scale for your project. Take the time to find a piece you really like to live with. As Willie Nelson says, 'The early bird may get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.' Bathroom sinks can be so much more fun than the 'hospital equipment' look of the past. Surprisingly, historic cabinets are the latest innovation not only in bathrooms, but in kitchens as well, anywhere a sink would be convenient. Go for an exciting or timeless look - 'Exuberance is beauty,' according to William Blake. Of course, recycling a historic piece is so much better for our environment as well.
